Our sixth edition of ‘Green Runs Deep’ features Bethany, a Celtics Down Under friend from Massachusetts, in the United States of America. ‘Betsy’ as she prefers to be called, was one of my earliest followers on Twitter, and I was all the more fortunate for getting to know her. Not only is she a truly wonderful person, die-hard Celtics fan, and all-around Boston & New England Sports nut, but she has a wicked sense of humour, and wields the sword of sarcasm like a seasoned warrior.
Please tell us about yourself..
My name is Bethany but I go by Betsy. This is a nickname I was given when I was little to go along with my twin brother’s – Bud and Betsy. However, those closest to me call me Bee. I’m a pharmacist for Wegmans Food Markets in Massachusetts and also a new mom! Though I don’t have much of it, in my spare time I love to work out, hang out with family and dogs and I’m just starting to get into photography! Lastly, I love sports. Always on in my house, or sports talk radio.

How did you first become a fan of the Boston Celtics?
Football was always the sport to watch in my house growing up. But who didn’t watch the Celtics in the 80’s? However, my love for this team came later, in the mid 2000’s. My husband is into basketball, so luckily I started paying attention and asking more questions when we started dating. I’m so competitive and with my semi ADD, (self diagnosed), I found the fast pace of the game was perfect for me!

When did you first see the Boston Celtics play? When did you manage to see your first live Celtics game?
First game on tv? Definitely in the 80’s. I can remember thinking Bird was possibly related to us- Bird had a moustache and so did my dad. They also both have big noses! Anyway, I started watching them religiously in 2007 and now… well… I record every game and usually watch them when I work out in the morning before work. Lana goes to bed at 8 and wakes up at 4:30. Guess what that means for me?
My first game was in 2009. I bought tickets for my husband for Valentine’s day. Now I go to about 5-6 games a year. Wish it was more!
Who is your favorite Celtics player? Past? And present? And what do they, or have they meant to you?
Favorite all time is Paul Pierce. He’s the epitome of a Celtic. I was devastated when he was traded and will never forget the look on his face during that Nets press conference. His homecoming was so amazing! I cried then too! Also love McHale, Bird, KG and Russel. I love heart and grit.

Can you tell us about how the Boston Celtics communities, whether globally, or in Boston, make you feel a part of such a large, and loving sisterhood/brotherhood?
One of the things I love about my Twitter Celtics fam is how widespread it is! Since basketball is more popular worldwide, I have friends all over the world. I know we only talk on Twitter, but I consider everyone actual friends! I’ve received gifts for my daughter from multiple friends in Australia and England! My husband doesn’t quite get it, but to me? It’s just a way to communicate, like the phone. Our love for green brought us together but our love for one another keeps us together! This year I hope to attend the Red’s Army party in Boston.

Can you tell us about your proudest, or most memorable moment that’s occurred whilst being such a loyal member of the Boston Celtics fan base?
Paul’s homecoming! The love we showed him and KG was so amazing. You could just feel the electricity in the building that night. So much love and respect for them both, but really for Paul. Amazing.

So far this season, we’ve established an open, fast-paced, and high-scoring offensive style, however, our defensive performance has lowered. With this current trend, how do you see the team holding up over 82 games?
We need to learn how to CLOSE OUT GAMES! We also need someone to make the last shot! Jeff Green needs to become more comfortable and create his shot in those moments. He has the ability! I don’t think we’re winning any championships this year, but I like the fast paced offense. I also love watching Rondo create these crazy passes and shots for his teammates. I am a fan of Bass and wish he got more minutes. I see us being around 45 wins this year.

Can you share your thoughts on our Celtics community in Australia? Do you see a lot of the Celtic Pride in our many members?
LOVE MY AUSSIE CELTICS FAM! You all are insightful, funny, intelligent and caring group of people. And you are all amazing at Photoshop. I don’t know what’s in the water but all of you can make great memes! Lots of Celtic Pride for sure.
Love My Aussie Celtics Fam!
Any finals words to share with your fellow Celtics fans?
Hang in there! We have some great young talent to build upon… and Lebron’s getting older!
