In just his second game as a Celtic, Jameer Nelson would be the starting point guard against the Orlando Magic.
The Celtics started 0-10 from the field & fell behind 9-2 at the first timeout. After the timeout the Magic hit a 3 to extend their lead to 10 but Bradley would finally hit a field goal for Boston. The Celtics couldn’t get any rhythm & fell behind 20-4 after an Oladipo slam. Smart got fouled on a 3 & went 2/3 but would grab the offensive rebound on the miss & Olynyk would hit Boston’s 2nd field goal of the game. Smart got 7 first quarter free throw attempts but would only hit 3 & as a team they shot 2-22 on field goals & would trail 9-26 after one.
The 2nd didn’t start much better as the C’s fell behind by a game high 21. The Celtics scored on consecutive trips down the floor for the first time but couldn’t get stops at the other end as Gordon scored 6 straight for the Magic as they went up by 25 at 40-15. Boston answered with a 6-0 run to get the deficit back under 20. The Magic would answer & be able to maintain a 23 point lead which they’d take into halftime. The Celtics would shoot 26% from the field & not hit a 3 at the half. Bradley was the highest scorer & most efficient for Boston with 8 on 3/7 shooting.
A better start to this half by Boston as they were making shots as Avery hit a 3, his first on his last 16 attempts to cut the Magic lead to 20. Orlando answered with a 5-0 run to go back up 25. Avery hit his 3rd 3 of the quarter & Nelson got a steal & a layup to make it an 18 point game. Orlando were able to keep the trend going & answer Boston’s run to get their lead back past 20. The Magic closed the quarter on a 7-0 run & would take a 25 point lead into the last.
Bass would start the Celtics scoring off in the 4th with a dunk, Nelson hit a 3 & Wright through down a slam to cut the Magic lead back to 20. Turner & Crowder would add to the run (12-0) & made it a 15 point game with 8 minutes still left. Frye would stop the run with a 3 putting Orlando back up 18. Bass slammed down another one off of an offensive rebound & Wright scored 3 points to make it a 10 point game. Boston on the back of a 27-3 run would be down only 3 with 2:33 left in the game. An interesting call on Olynyk led to 2 free throws to Orlando who made them both to put Magic back up 7. A 35-15 4th quarter wasn’t enough as the spirited Celtics comeback fell short, Boston losing 100-95.
